grand marais exploration
2020
The designs are an exploitation of existing physical and visual connections; each designer needs to explore the explicit and implicit space-making opportunities inherent in each site. Architecture’s definition will vary heavily from one person to the next; one definition may be that architecture needs physical walls or protection from the elements. One may see architecture as something with a defined program and building. By looking at architecture differently, we can understand architecture as a single object or moment, a simple overhead plane. The program and activity that one does at the time of the visit, it is a passing moment, it is a connection that is experienced physically and visually in a singular fashion, and at times in concert with others.
Windsor is made up a of multitude of small residential neighbourhoods spread out and divided by infrastructure such as highways, railroads, overpasses and the Grand Marais Drain and Turkey Creek, dividing residents physically and visually from one neighbourhood to the next. With the infrastructure being a large part of its history, one can understand how the city was built around and for it. It’s safe to say railroads, highways and other infrastructure will not be relocated due to the nature of the massive cost and inability for relocation.
