Plymouth Art Gallery

Project overview
Plymouth Art Gallery explores a new contemporary setting for art within an established streetscape. The design brings a distinct architectural presence to a corner site, pairing a quiet ground-level base with an expressive rhythm of vertical fins above.
The repeated fins give depth to the upper elevations, catching light and casting shadows that change the reading of the façade throughout the day. Their close spacing creates a textured surface, balanced by the broad, pale planes at street level. This contrast allows the building to hold a clear identity alongside its neighbours.
A recessed corner entrance addresses both street frontages, while areas of glazing offer glimpses into the gallery. The proposal considers the gallery as both a place to encounter art and a participant in everyday street life, connecting the experience of arrival with the public realm.
